I woke up early today to watch the sunrise over the Grand Canyon and it was worth it. The morning air was crisp and the sky was like a canvas. As the sunlight danced across the walls of the canyon, the colors changed from grey to gold. It was spectacular.

After a delicious buffet breakfast at the Bright Angel Lodge our group was joined by a local expert who shared information and stories about the Grand Canyon. As we drove around the South Rim, he told us about the animals, trees and flowers that call this environment 7000 feet above sea level home.

We visited the Desert View Watchtower where we saw Native American Artwork and panoramic biews of the canyon.

Window view of Grand Canyon from tower window. An unusual perspective.

Circular stairs to top of tower decorated with native inspired artwork.

This picture of the ceiling of the Watch Tower can't fully represent its vibrant hues.

Hand painted murals illustrate Hopi mythology and religious ceremonies.
After climbing the tower and admiring the artwork, we were free for an afternoon on our own.

Lunch was shared with a few of our fellow adventurers at the Bright Angel Cafe. It was nice to get to know them better. Next, Tom and I were ready to explore the area surrounding the South Rim.

This looks like another planet!

It's a long, long way down!

Lookout Tower houses and observation station and gift shop. One of the best photo spots.

After a leisurely afternoon, our Adventures Guides set up a dinner reservation for us at the El Tovar Hotel. (We were underwhelmed by the food and dry bread. I had to send my meal back because it was so bad.)

After our meal, we were treated to a breathtaking sunset at the Grand Canyon!
